Series; The Thirty-six Outstanding Poems

Ichikawa Ichizo III as Tenjiku Tokubei, 1857 - Terrific portrait of Ichikawa Ichizo III as the magician Tenjiku Tokubei, conjuring up a giant toad to help fight off his enemies. Guards attacking him with pole arms tumble to the ground on either side as he clasps his hands together, casting a spell, a cloud of smoke rising behind him. He wears a fine brocade robe trimmed with fringe over a suit of armor, his hair sticking up wildly atop his head with longer locks pulled back into a low ponytail. A very curious object that looks like a scalp with white hair and an ear can be seen at lower left. The still-life inset above is by Gengyo Miyagi. A terrific supernatural subject, nicely composed and detailed with fine bokashi shading.
