Twenty-three Loyal Retainers of Ako Preparing to Depart under the Direction of Oboshi, 1847 - 1848

Comments - Terrific triptych depicting twenty-three of the famous 47 ronin making preparations for the night attack under the direction of their leader, Oboshi Yuranosuke. He sits on a folding stool at top center, staring down with a stern frown as a kneeling messenger reports to him, gesturing with his hand. The other samurai are in various stages of dressing or checking their weapons, each carefully identified by a yellow name cartouche. At upper right, a warrior holds out the ronin's distinctive black and white dogtooth bordered robe for an older man as he tightens his waist sash. Just below, a retainer examines the blade of his sword by candlelight, while at bottom, a young man pulls on the sleeve of his armor, using his teeth to grip the edge. A great image with expressive figures and wonderful detail.
