Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Fireworks at Ryogoku, 1857

Comments - Terrific illustration of the bustling Ryogoku area on a summer night. At left, a woman grins and waves as she spies a friend, the girl beside her carrying a lantern hanging from a slender bamboo pole. The beauty in the center waves back with a smile. Just behind her, a boy carries fans for sale from a rack over his shoulder. At right a beauty in a blue and white tie-dyed summer kimono relaxes with a cup of tea on a bench at a tea stand. Fireworks explode in a shower of sparks in the night sky, the river below dotted with boats. A lively street scene with wonderful detail.
