Series; The Island of Women and the Treasure Ship - This print is from a fantastic shunga series depicting the three stranded sailors arriving at the mythical Isle of Women. Originating in Chinese stories, the island was populated by only women who conceived children with the wind itself and gave birth to only more women. The Treasure Ship was a vessel of the Seven Lucky Gods and brought good fortune and great treasures to those it visited. While the sailors arrived on the island on a normal fishing boat swept off course, the title of the series refers both to good fortune of the men as well as the great treasures the women saw them as.

This series was produced in the 1860's by Koikawa Shozan and was a lighthearted parallel to the popular kabuki play "The Heike and the Island of Women", a tragedy following the life of the exile Shunkan. Note the architectural elements of Chinese, Korean and Ryukyuan cultures within these designs that add to the mystical and exotic environs of the Island of Women.
