Inukai Gempachi Directing the Attempted Arrest of Inuzuka Shino

Comments - Terrific kakemono or vertical diptych depicting the famous fight between Inukai Gempachi and Inuzuka Shino on the roof of Horyukaku, a tower of Koga Castle. This scene illustrates a popular episode from the Edo era novel "Tale of the Eight Dog Heroes of Satomi," written by Kyokutei Bakin. Atop the tiled roof, Inuzuka stands atop the neck of a falling guard, who sprawls face down with his feet kicking up in the air above him. Inuzuka scowls angrily, gripping his sword as he maintains his balance. On the balcony below, Gempachi balances with one foot atop the railing, gripping an iron truncheon between his teeth and stretching out a rope between his hands. He stares up with an alarmed expression, his eyes wide and brows slightly furrowed. He wears a kimono over a suit of armor trimmed with fringe that swings with his movement. A great design, beautifully detailed, in the rarely seen kakemono format.
