From an untitled series of okubi-e

Untitled series of okubi-e - Designed as the final masterwork of Toyokuni III's long and illustrious career, this untitled series of okubi-e or large head kabuki portraits was planned to include 150 prints by the artist. Only 72 prints were issued, however, along with two preparatory sketches and two proof prints for a total of 76 known works. For an unknown reason, Yoshitora completed 12 designs for the group, perhaps assisting the aging artist. Considered one of Toyokuni III's greatest series, these incredible images are exquisitely printed with rich jewel-tone colors, exceptional block carving, and deluxe treatments such as burnishing or embossing. They remain a standout in quality and execution as one of the finest kabuki portrait series of the age.

Actor with a Bow, 1863 - Intense portrait of a young man gripping a bow against his shoulder, his expression fraught with worry and disappointment. One sleeve of his deep blue kimono has been pushed off the shoulder to reveal a red under robe with a design of yellow scrolls and blue and green flowers. His shorter hair curves around his face, with the rest pulled back into a long thick ponytail. A terrific, expressive figure and a bold image, beautifully detailed with incredibly fine line work in the hair and embossing in the white cloth at left.
