Lord Higashiyama Yoshimasa's Excursion to Yoshino, 1863

Comments - Handsome depiction of the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa and his court enjoying an excursion to Yoshino to view the cherry blossoms. Next to a temple building, cloth panels are set up around a large mat to provide privacy for the shogun and his retinue. Yoshimasa sits on a small platform, his face hidden by a flowering tree. A picnic of food and sweets, including a pineapple, is spread out in the center, surrounded by seated nobles wearing black robes and court caps. At right, servants relax in a separate enclosure with sake and mochi (rice cakes). A fantastic spring scene, attractively colored and detailed, with fine bokashi shading in the sky and drifting clouds. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
