Series; A Mirror of the Achievements of Children, 1881

Oniwakamaru Killing a Giant Carp; Takeda Katsuchiyo Killing a Badger - Terrific, uncut page from Yoshitoshi's rarely seen series "A Mirror of the Achievements of Children," depicting the heroic actions or accomplishments of young children. The top image depicts Oniwakamaru killing the giant carp that had eaten his mother after she fell into a pool at the foot of Bishamon Waterfall. Below, Takeda Katsuchiyo attacks the wooden horse where he had stored his saddle. The horse had been taken over by the spirit of a badger and recognizing the deception, Takeda killed the animal, which goes flying in pain through the night sky. These lively scenes are beautifully detailed and vibrantly colored, with a dusting of mica across the top of the bottom design. We rarely come across designs from this series, and we've never seen an uncut page before. A great find.
