Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Shizuka Gozen, circa 1835 - 1840

Comments - Lovely portrait of the beautiful Shizuka Gozen, the mistress of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, as shirabyoshi dancer. She smiles sweetly as she looks over her shoulder, holding one sleeve to her shoulder. She wears an intricately patterned gray vest over a green kimono with a design of waterwheels made of cherry blossoms and flowing water. A tall yellow court cap is tied under her chin, and a sword is tucked at her side. A fine reed blind is rolled up overhead, fastened with a tasseled cord. A handsome Edo era kakemono or vertical diptych by Kuniyoshi.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 28 1/2" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels, backed with paper. A couple losses, a few small wormholes and thinning spots, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
