The Founding of Itsukushima Shrine in Miyojima, 1861

Comments - Fantastic triptych of the founding of Itsukushima Shrine in Miyojima by Taira no Kiyomori in the twelfth century. The Dragon Princess appears above the white-capped waves, rays of light radiating through the dark night sky. Beneath the waves you can see her scaly dragon form. On the verandah of a palace at right, Taira no Kiyomori watches with a stern expression. Some of his surprised retainers stare in astonishment while others throw their arms up in alarm at the sight. The butterfly mon or crest of the Taira Clan appears on the drapery at upper right. An intriguing subject with a dramatic composition and fine shading in the sky.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Slight soiling, a few creases, slight rubbing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
