Tales of the Floating World on Eastern Brocade - Dating from 1867 - 1868, this terrific early series by Yoshitoshi illustrates famous tales by a variety of storytellers. The stories are retold by Kanagaki Robun in text blocks that take the form of a book with the pages bent back. Yoshitoshi depicts the violence and drama of these popular narratives with wonderful realism and his characteristic attention to detail. Images from this early series are rarely seen on the market and are great choice for a Yoshitoshi enthusiast or a collector interested in Japanese folklore and legends.

Sekiguchi Yataro Facing Wolves in the Hakone Mountains, 1867 - Terrific night scene of Sekiguchi Yataro facing a trio of snarling wolves in the Hakone Mountains. A companion of Miyamoto Musashi, he stands atop a rocky cliff, leaning forward with a defiant stare as he grips a wooden pole as a weapon. His striped kimono is tucked up at the waist for easier movement, revealing the bulging muscles of his legs. A great atmospheric design with soft shading in the night sky and handsome wood grain impression in the background.
