Flowers of Edo Enjoy the Evening Cool on Pleasure Boats, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Lovely image of a nobleman and a group of beauties enjoying the evening cool on from a pleasure boat. The young man sits at right, smiling as he holds out a red lacquer sake cup. A dancer performs in the center, gracefully tossing a fan above her head. At left, several women watch the entertainment eagerly from a smaller pleasure boat, close enough that one of the beauties rests her hand on the larger ship. Another boat pulls alongside at right, with a commoner at far right in a tie-dyed cotton kimono adjusting the towel over his shoulder. Softly shaded paper lanterns hang from the roof of the cabin, adding a festive air to the scene. A beautiful design, attractively colored with a wonderful setting. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
