Heian Era Beauty

Series; Mirror of Famous Women from Ancient to Modern Times

Heian Era Beauty - Intriguing scene of a Heian era beauty in formal court attire kneeling beside a koto, shyly turning away and hiding her face behind her sleeve. She wears layers of colorful robes, her long hair trailing atop the fabric as it falls around her on the floor. A violet cloth screen at right is patterned with phoenixes, a creature associated with the emperor. The room opens onto a verandah with a view of a full moon beyond a maple tree in autumn, with fine reed blinds hanging in the opening. A charming image.
