Series; Thirty-six Portraits of Actors in Various Roles
Soganoya Goro and Soganoya Choroku as Yajirobei and Kitahachi, 1928 - Terrific kabuki double portrait of comedians Soganoya Goro and Soganoya Choroku as the bumbling travelers in "Hizakurige" or "Shank's Mare." The drama chronicles the comic misadventures of the two commoners, Yajirobei and Kitahachi, as they make their along the famed Tokaido Road. Here, one fellow stares down angrily at his companion, his lips tightly closed and brows furrowed. He wears a blue and white patterned towel across his head and has bundles tied over his shoulder. The other man stares ahead solemnly, holding his hat before him. The peak of Mt. Fuji appears in the distance above the clouds. Wonderful detail in these expressive figures.
