Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Meiji Imperial Procession, 1892

Comments - Handsome view of an Imperial procession with the Meiji Emperor and Empress riding in an elegant carriage decorated with the chrysanthemum crest and topped with a golden phoenix. Six white horses pull the carriage, with a driver on the front seat and a footman standing at back, and grooms walking alongside the animals. The emperor can be seen through the window, in a military dress, his wife wears the latest Western fashions. Crowds line the street and strings of red and white lanterns and the bright blossoming cherry trees add a festive air. Attractively colored and detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms. An interesting contemporary look at the Meiji era.
