Sadao Watanabe (1913 - 1996) Original Japanese Stencil Print
The Flight into Egypt

Sadao Watanabe - A convert to Christianity at the age of seventeen, Japanese artist Sadao Watanabe's prints all feature Christian imagery. While apprenticed to a fabric dyer as a young man, Watanabe became interested in the mingei or folk art movement after meeting its leader, Yanagi Soetsu. He studied with folk artist Serizawa Keisuke, learning the katazome method of stencil printing, and began producing his own prints using this traditional technique. Katazome is a traditional craft that dates back hundreds of years, using paper stencils to create colorful dyed designs on fabric or handmade paper. Using bold line work and bright colors, Watanabe's aim was to produce art for common people, which could be enjoyed in everyday settings. His prints are highly collectible and an interesting example of the mingei tradition in Japan.
