Sano Genzaemon Tsuneyo Cutting His Bonazi Trees to Warm Hojo Tokiyori, 1884

Comments - Wonderful scene of Sano Genzaemon Tsuneyo carrying a branch that he has just cut from one of his prized bonsai trees to cook a meal for a guest. When a monk arrived unexpectedly at Tsuneyo's rather shabby home, the poor man and his wife treated the surprise visitor with as much honor as they could, even burning Tsuneyo's ancient miniature trees. The monk was actually the retired regent Hojo Tokiyori, who was disguised during an intelligence gathering mission. Tokiyori kneels on a mat at right in front of the warm fire burning in the floor brazier, watching silently. Tsuneyo's wife kneels at left, looking solemn, her tea ceremony implements set out beside her. A poignant subject, beautifully drawn with handsome detail in the household setting and furnishing, and a lovely winter landscape outside. Includes delicate embossing in the white robes and soft bokashi shading in the sky. A terrific illustration from this famous tale
