Series; Yoshitoshi's Courageous Warriors

Uesugi Kenshin Nyudo Terutora Riding into Battle, 1883 - Terrific portrait of the great warrior Uesugi Kenshin Nyudo Terutora, known as the Dragon of Echigo, galloping into battle on a dark horse. He grips his spear with one hand while holding the reins with the other, the wind whipping his monk's cowl around his head. Clouds of smoke billow into the sky around him, beautifully framing the horse and figure and creating a dramatic, atmospheric setting for this legendary general. Beautiful color and shading, with delicate embossing in the white monk's cowl. This image appears on page 65 of van den Ing and Schaap's book "Beauty and Violence: Japanese Prints by Yoshitoshi." A fantastic Yoshitoshi design and an excellent first edition printing with three color title cartouche.
