The Burning of the Monju Hall at Toeizan Temple on the 15th Day of the 5th Month, 1868

Comments - Terrific 1874 triptych by Yoshitoshi depicting the burning of Monju Hall at Toeizan Temple during a battle between shogunate loyalists and Meiji Imperial forces in 1868, part of the Boshin War. This dramatic scene shows fierce combat with swords, spears, and guns, with men clashing among clouds of smoke from shelling and the burning temple hall. The battle continues on the verandah and bridge of the structure as red flames pour from the hall in the background. A wounded samurai slumps over the railing at right, while in the center, a warrior takes a bullet, flying backwards under the slanting rain. An incredible image from this violent conflict, with fine detail in the expressive figures and rich, vibrant color. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A great Yoshitoshi design.
