The First Series of Modern Beauties

Gifu Paper Lantern, 1930 - Beautiful portrait of a young woman hanging up a Gifu paper lantern, a traditional paper lantern produced in the city of Gifu in Gifu Prefecture. She gently holds the bottom as she hangs the lantern up by a slender cord, a warm glow coming from the candle inside. The lantern itself is decorated with blue blossoms and soft green leaves, with delicate embossed grasses. She wears a blue checked summer kimono, tied with a blue striped obi, her hair pulled back into a soft bun adorned with a comb and small flowers. The reed blind behind her is detailed with fine line work. A lovely image with the figure and lantern set off against the black night sky. This wonderful design is from a limited edition of 250 prints. Rarely seen on the market and a highly desirable shin hanga beauty portrait by Shinsui.
