Footwarmer by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Footwarmer

Series; Contemporary Manners and the Passing of Time

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Footwarmer - Interesting portrait of a beauty reclining on the floor with her feet tucked under a kotatsu, a low table frame with a small brazier beneath it, covered with blankets or futons to keep the heat in. She rests her head atop her hand, which also holds a slender pipe. Two books rest on the blanket at right, while the pipe case, tobacco pouch, and kimono atop the warmer suggest that she has a male visitor. Nicely colored and detailed with embossing in the white kimono collar and the yellow covers of the books. We've never come across this subject in reprint before.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 15 1/8" x 10 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A couple light creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
