The Asahiya Widow

Series; Renowned Beauties Likened to the Six Immortal Poets

The Asahiya Widow - Wonderful Utamaro portrait of a young beauty drying the side of her face with a towel after a bath. Her shaved eyebrows and hairstyle indicate that she is a widow. She wears a gray cotton kimono with a tie-dyed seashell pattern, tied with a green obi. The inset at top left features a go board as part of a picture puzzle sounding like the beauty's name. A classic image from the golden age of Japanese woodblocks, with fine detail in the hairline.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Image Size - 15" x 10" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few light creases at corners. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
