Preparing for a Wedding, 1851

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of wedding preparations from the play "Genji Moyo Furisode Hinagata." In the center, a beauty kneels behind Ashikaga, helping him to dress by wrapping a sash around his waist. His kimono is blue at the top with Genji symbols, with white sleeves and border that are delicately embossed. At right, a woman holds a carefully folded garment, while another beauty at left smoothes out a black robe on the floor. At left, a low white table holds a pine tree, figures of the elderly couple Jo and Uba, and a "straw raincoat" turtle, traditional symbols of longevity and marital harmony. At right a lacquer offering tray holds graduated sake cups and two elegant long-handled sake servers rest on the floor nearby. Ichikawa Danjuro VIII appears as Ashikaga. Beautifully detailed, with handsome wood grain impression in the background.
