Summer: Enjoying the Cool of Evening at the Otonashi River in Oji, 1861 - Terrific illustration from the "Tale of Genji" of Prince Genji and his companions enjoying the evening cool along the Otonashi River in Oji. The young nobleman stands barefoot on the porch, fanning himself, as the beauty kneeling next to him gestures towards a woman wading through the water. She lifts the hem of her blue kimono to keep it from getting wet as she cools off in the shallow river. At right, a servant carries in an elegant lacquer tray holding a meal, including, a large fish on a blue and white ceramic platter. Two other women frolic in the water beyond as a man swims past. The opposite shore features a lovely garden with stepping stone paths and stone lanterns. A charming triptych, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
