Preparing for Music

Series: Ladies' Etiquette Pictures

Preparing for Music - Lovely image of beauties in an interior from Chikanobu's series demonstrating the proper behavior and dress for upper class ladies during the Meiji era. They are preparing for a musical performance, with the young woman in the center setting up an unusual two-stringed instrument similar to a koto called a nigenkin. The beauty at right carries a teacup on a fine lacquer stand, smiling at her companion who is already quietly seated. At left, another woman brings in a second candlestick, the red flames flickering brightly. A red lacquer table holds a basket with an arrangement of wisteria blossoms, and the standing screen at right shows a full moon behind bamboo, suggesting an elegant interior. A charming design with attractive detail in the colorful kimono and obi fabrics.
