Ghost of the Courtesan Takao, 1855

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of the ghost of the murdered courtesan Takao returning to haunt those responsible for her death. Frightened by her appearance, a man crouches beside a folding screen, covering under his sleeves. She stares down at him with a wide-eyed grimace, her clenched fist hand held out over him with a foxfire dancing above it. The blue shading about her eyes indicates that she is dead, along with her wild shaggy hair. She wears a blue kimono bordered with maple leaves and tied with a violet sash. The actors are Onoe Baiko IV as the ghost of Takao and Nakamura Tsuruzo I. A great supernatural design with fine line work in the hair and soft bokashi shading in the background.
