Yamauba Watching a Young Kintoki Playing with His Mountain Friends, 1890

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting Sakata Kintoki, also known as Kintaro, a boy who grew up in the mountains and could speak animal language, playing with his animal friends. He rides on the back of a bear cub, a monkey at his side carrying a branch laden with fruit and white rabbits dancing about at left. Yamauba, the mountain woman who raised him, watches him at right, her long hair flowing over her shoulders. She wears a delicately embossed white kimono covered with a mantle of leaves, and carries a rustic wooden staff. A waterfall rushes over the cliff behind them, the scene framed by colorful red maple leaves. Beautifully detailed with fine burnished detail in the bear's fur. A great image from this classic tale and an extremely rare Chikanobu design.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight toning, soiling, and rubbing, a few creases, a few ink marks. Please photos for details. Good overall.
