Lord Yoritomo's Hunt at Mount Fuji, 1859

Comments - Fantastic depiction of the Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo's hunting party at the base of Mt. Fuji in 1193. A giant boar attacked the party and the brave Tadatsune killed the wild beast. Here, Tadatsune straddles the back of the enormous snarling animal he prepares to stab it with his sword, its body pierced with arrows. Samurai and beaters tumble over each other in their haste to escape the creature, while the shogun watches from horseback on the rocky hilltop at right, surrounded by his retainers. At left, the hunt continues as a black bear, a deer, and many rabbits and foxes flee from archers on horseback and beaters driving them forward on foot. The rugged gray peak of Mt. Fuji fills the background, the view framed by pine trees. Terrific detail and action in this incredible image. A fascinating woodblock and a great subject for a samurai enthusiast, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
