The Tokugawa Shoguns, 1875 - Terrific depiction of the Tokugawa shoguns, with the first Shogun Ieyasu seated in the center on a low platform dressed in elegant black robes with a faint burnished pattern. He is surrounded by young and old samurai, in a variety of formal dress, with two figures in full armor. The young warrior at right wears a fine vest over his armor and a horned battle helmet topped with a dragon, a bow in his hand and a quiver of arrows at his back. Each figure is carefully identified with a red name cartouche, and the purple drapery overhead features the three hollyhock crest of the Tokugawa Clan. A handsome design with vibrant color, nicely detailed with embossing in the white robes. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A great historical subject.
