Series; Courtesans of All Corners of Edo

Katsuyama of Okamotoya, circa mid-1830s - Lovely portrait of the courtesan Katsuyama of Okamotoya, looking up with a slight smile as she kneels among art supplies and completed painted panels, one hand holding a slender pipe. She wears an elegant red tie-dyed kimono bordered with green and blue fabric with gray stripes and large blossoms, her hair arranged with tortoiseshell combs and many hairpins. At left, an ink stone rests next a bowl of water and containers of pigment, alongside a bamboo holder filled with brushes. A circular inset at upper left shows a view of steep steps leading through a torii gate to a shrine, framed by red flowers and deep green leaves. A beautiful image with wonderful color and detail.

Artist - Eisen (1790 - 1848)

Image Size - 14 3/4" x 10"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Paper remnants on reverse at edges from previous folio mounting. A few small holes, repaired. Stain at upper right, slight soiling and rubbing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
