Meeting at a Tea Stand, 1848

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Mukashigatari inazuma zoshi" showing a group meeting at the Murairo tea stand. In the left panel, the middle-aged Tosa no Shogen sits on a bench, his daughter Omitsu beside him. He frowns unhappily at the samurai Kano Shirojiro Motonobu at right, who is accompanied by his student, Hasebe Unkoku. Motonobu stares intently at the beauty, who smiles back at him over her shoulder, toying with a folding fan between her hands. At right, the student crouches behind his master with a rather foolish expression, clutching his hands to his chest as if frightened. At left, a teakettle sits atop a brazier and cups are arranged on wooden shelves. A blossoming cherry tree frames the scene overhead above a stone retaining wall. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I, Bando Mitsugoro IV, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, and Nakayama Bungoro II. An attractive subject with a nicely detailed setting and burnishing in Motonobu's black coat and kimono.
