Serving a Courtesan Sake, 1869

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of an elderly woman Aso serving the courtesan Toyama sake as they sit in front of an altar with a huge figure of a deity behind it. Toyama smiles coyly as she tilts her head away, while the white-haired woman eyes her slyly out of the corners of her eyes. At right, a man pushes up his kimono sleeve as he cocks his head away from the women, watching them suspiciously. The altar holds a vase with golden yellow lotus blossoms and leaves, and a wisp of smoke rises from an incense burner. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III, Onoe Kikujiro, and Sawamura Tossho II. A great bold design with lively color and expressive figures. Nicely detailed with embossing in the white hair and bokashi shading in the background.
