Series; Women in Benkei-checked Fabrics
Drying Board: Hiyodorigoe no sakaotoshi, 1844 - Attractive image of a beauty spreading cloth out on a slanted board to dry flat. She carefully smoothes a length of tie-dyed fabric with one hand, smiling as she looks down at a butterfly or moth fluttering just above the board. She wears a blue, gray, and black checked kimono tied with a tie-dyed obi, a dotted towel fastened across her shoulder and torso. The angle of the wooden plank and the deer pattern on the blue cloth refer to the surprise attack at Hiyodorigoe in which Benkei took part. A charming design from this rarely seen Kuniyoshi beauty series.
