Sato Yomoshichi, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of an actor in the role of Sato Yomoshichi, the brother of the hapless Oiwa, wife of Tamiya Iemon in the classic ghost story "Yotsuya Kaidan." Here, he looks over his with a suspicious frown as he looks up from reading a letter. He wears a gray outer robe with a mandarin orange crest on the shoulders, his hair pulled back into a thick topknot tied with a white cord. The circular inset is framed by a background of a mandarin orange branch covered with fruit and lush green leaves, along with confetti-like shapes in yellow and brown. An interesting design with soft bokashi shading in the blue sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Slight soiling, light ink offsetting. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
