Cuckoo by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Cuckoo

Series: Picture List of Birds, 1860 (Tori zukushi)

Picture List of Birds - This is a great, rarely seen series by Toyokuni III depicting actors in famous roles, each paired with a specific type of bird, which appears in the background of each scene. These are wonderful bold images, with dynamic compositions and a great use of color. The large half-length portrait format allows for a close-up view with excellent detail. These are outstanding woodblock prints, some of the nicest actor images we've seen, and they would make a fantastic addition to any print collection.

Cuckoo - Interesting kabuki portrait of Ichimura Uzaemon III as a fishmonger out selling the first bonito of the year in the play "Katsuo Uri" (Bonito). He carries a yoke over his shoulder as he makes his way through the early dawn, a worried expression on his face. He wears a blue tie-dyed kimono patterned with spirals and dots over a black undergarment, a dotted towel wrapped around his forehead. In the distance, Nihohbashi Bridge is already busy with traffic as vendors and travelers begin their days. A cuckoo flutters across the blue sky above the dark silhouette of the castle walls below. A handsome design.
