Tametomo Sinking Mochimitsu's Ship with a Single Arrow, 1883

Comments - Fantastic triptych of the great archer Minamoto no Tametomo sinking the leading ship of Mochimitsu's fleet with a single arrow. He perches upon a rocky outcropping at left, his gripping his bow, having just released the arrow, the wind blowing his robes about him. Tametomo's mistress, Sasaraye, who is armed with a naginata, and his retainer, Oniyasha, holding an iron club, watch as the ship flounders in the sea, the single arrow piercing its thick hull. A group of rough islanders in straw hats looks on in admiration. A dynamic composition with outstanding detail and fine bokashi shading in the sky, along with a dusting of mica over the water. A wonderful posthumous printing of Kuniyoshi's terrific design.
