Star Actors Sightseeing at Sumida, 1883

Comments - Comic scene of actors offstage taking part in a snowball fight along the shore of the Sumida River. The men take on the women, hurling mounds of snow at each other. At lower right, a tattoo man prepares to fling a shovel full of snow, while the fireman in a quilted jacket next to him points at the women. In the center, a beauty tumbles backwards onto the ground, knocking down a woman with a shovel behind her. A lively and amusing scene, with some actors taking part happily and others seeming to be not so excited. A great kabuki subject.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
