Samurai Committing Suicide, 1885

Comments - Dramatic kabuki portrait of a samurai committing suicide at a sluice gate along a river. He strikes a pose with his sword extended at left and his hand thrown out at right. Blood soaks through the white sash tied around his waist, the sleeves of his black outer kimono pushed down to the waist. He holds a scroll between his teeth, perhaps containing his death poem, looking disheveled with loose hair framing his face. The wooden gate frames the dark night sky with pine branches over head, the water rushing in towards behind the warrior. A bold design with the single large figure set off by the striking setting. Detailed with burnishing in the black robe and a dusting of mica across the sky.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 27 7/8" + margins as shown
