Upstairs at a Hot Spring

Comments - Intriguing scene of beauties and guests relaxing upstairs at an onsen or hot spring in the mountains. In the center, two entertainers play shamisen while another dances around waving a towel. Refreshments are set out on a low table, including a platter of fish. Behind the dancer, a man in a striped kimono pours sake for his companion. At right, two women enjoy a game of go, while a foreign couple can be seen on the verandah outside, the man drinking from a glass goblet and holding what appears to be a map. At lower left, visitors soak in a deep tub beneath streams of water rushing from pipes in the wall. A fantastic image of the activities at a traditional Japanese hot spring. Wonderful detail in the figures and architectural setting, with a handsome landscape and a view of Mt. Fuji in the distance.
