Series; One Hundred Famous Views in the Various Provinces

The Seashore at Takanawa in Edo, 1861 - Intriguing view of the shoreline at Takanawa in Edo. At right, a foreign woman rides sidesaddle on a horse, carrying a riding crop in hand. She wears a button front jacket over a long full skirt, and a bonnet trimmed with ruffles. At lower left, a Chinese man with a long pigtail walks along carrying an umbrella. The embankment is crowded with travelers and laborers, with buildings lining the curving waterfront. A pine tree frames the softly shaded blue sky overhead. An attractive design, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
