Attacker and Bloody Victim, 1865

Comments - Dramatic scene of an attacker extending a bloody sword toward his victim, who clings to a wooden pillar of a ramshackle roadside shrine. The fellow is bleeding from multiple wounds, staring over his shoulder with a scowl, a few locks of his disheveled hair framing his face. The attacker turns his head away with an angry grimace, one sleeve of his striped blue kimono pushed down to his waist. Grasses grow through the floorboards of the structure, and the doors are attached with ropes. From left, the actors are Nakamura Tsuruzo as and Ichimura Kakitsu IV. An intriguing image with expressive figures and an atmospheric setting.
