Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Taira Shigemori Racing around the Imperial Palace

Comments - Fantastic image from the Heiji Rebellion of the warrior Taira Shigemori racing around the Imperial Palace on horseback, looking over his shoulder with his bow in hand. He is being chased by Minamoto no Yoshihira, whom he will eventually lead out of the palace complex and into a trap. He flies past the verandah, galloping between two large pine trees, the horse's tail and the orange tassels fluttering out behind him. He wears a fine suit of armor and a horned battle helmet topped with a lion and a lotus blossom. A terrific design with a striking composition and a wonderful sense of movement. Includes a dusting of mica along the tree trunks at right.

Artist - Meiji era artist (unsigned)

Image Size - 14" x 28" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. One hole, a couple thinning spots at edges, repaired. Very slight ink offsetting. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
