Series; Life Drawings of People of Foreign Nations

Russians Raising Sheep for Wool, 1860 - Intriguing image of a Russian man feeding a goat as an officer watches (not a sheep as the title indicates). The man bends over with pieces of food in each hand, the goat looking up and focusing on one of the morsels. His countryman wears a long jacket over a button-front vest and pants held up with a medallion featuring a Russian eagle, along with a black hat topped with a feather. He rests his hand atop a cane with an ornate handle with a beaded tassel. Beautifully drawn and detailed with intricate line work in the goat's fur and the feather, and burnishing in the black clothing and hat. A terrific Yokohama-e portrait of foreigners in Japan.
