Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Changing Porters and Horses at Fujieda

Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido
From the Matsuda Publishing House of Tokyo

An early Meiji Tokaido release - This print is from an early Meiji re-release of Hiroshige’s Hoeido Tokaido series that was commissioned through the Meiji era Matsuda Publishing House of Tokyo. The publisher produced a new set of blocks for the entire Hoeido Tokaido and released a stunning set of Tokaido prints that is virtually indistinguishable from the originals.

These prints differ greatly from more commonly seen reprints in that the paper, often used as a first indicator of authenticity, is identical to the original paper used in the Hoeido Tokaido. The inks used were also natural dyes imitating the original Hoeido release. This series is so well done, and as the prints are close in age to the original release, they are sometimes confused with original Hoeido Tokaido prints. However, they are a rare early reprint set and a nice opportunity to collect beautifully printed Tokaido at a fraction of the cost of original Hoeido Tokaido prints. Enjoy shopping this beautiful group, we are excited to offer them!
