Ushiwaka Maru Being Trained in the Art of War by Sojobo, the King of the Tengu, 1898

Comments - Fantastic triptych of the young Ushiwaka Maru learning to fence with tengu under the direction of Sojobo, the king of the tengu, at Mt. Kurama. Winged spirits with bird-like beaks and claws, tengu are known for their fencing ability, and they trained Ushiwaka Maru, who becomes the master swordsman and samurai Yoshitsune. Gripping a wooden stick with both hands, the young boy leaps agilely in the air to dodge the blows of the creatures. The elderly Sojobo watches from the right, wearing a monk's mantle over his red-orange robe. His delicately embossed white beard and hair flow over his chest and shoulders, and he wears a tiny black cap. A fantastic forest setting with the full moon glowing behind pine branches in silhouette and a waterfall rushing down the rocky cliff at left.
