Comments - Moving kabuki scene from the play "Onna Kusunoki" depicting the wife of the great warrior Kusunoki Masashige preventing her young son from committing suicide. After Masashige's defeat and death at the Battle of Minatogawa, his son Kusunoki Tatewaki Masayuki considered killing himself, but his mother reminded him of his obligations to his family and the emperor, so he did not. The youth went on to become an important warrior, and his mother was regarded as the epitome of motherhood, a strong and virtuous woman. Here, the boy sits before his mother, Masanori, with a dirk in his hand, pulling open his pink and white robe to bare his stomach. He looks down with a sad smile as his mother exhorts him to remain strong and honor his family. She leans forward anxiously, a scroll in her outstretched hand. Her golden yellow kimono is patterned with circular motifs of a rabbit, birds, clouds, and plants, tied with a violet brocade obi over a white robe and a red under robe. Her long hair is pulled back over her shoulders into a low ponytail tied with a ribbon. The colorful figures are set off by a pale yellow background, bordered with a simulated black lacquer frame. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke IV and Ichikawa Danjuro IX. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair, embossing in the white kimono collar and Masayuki's robe, and burnishing in the lacquer frame.
