Shika Kojima Shimbun, 1877

Comments - Dramatic illustration of a battle during the Satsuma Rebellion, done for the Shika Kojima Shimbun newspaper. In the center, a wounded rebel samurai on a rearing horse has flung an enemy soldier into the air with his spear, the man tumbling head over heels through the sky with his gun and sword flying loose. Warriors rush forward from the right to meet the army's charge, as their leader Saigo Takamori directs the attack from atop at horse at far right, waving a tasseled command baton. A striking battlefield scene filled with action, with clouds of smoke billowing up into the night sky. Detailed with burnishing in the night black uniforms and fine bokashi shading.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/8" + margins as shown
