Plum Blossoms at Night, the Way You Like Them, 1847 - 1850

Comments - Lovely triptych showing three beauties admiring the blossoms of an enormous old plum tree at night. The young woman at right smiles happily as she looks back at her companions, lifting the hem of her robe as she walks along on tall wooden geta clogs. The beauty in the center wears a gray and white kimono patterned with vines, the white areas embossed with delicate lines. She holds a folding fan and grins back at her friend. The woman at left holds one sleeve to her chest, dressed in a blue-gray kimono bordered with small bell-shaped motifs, trimmed with layers of gourd print fabric. The tree's white blossoms and buds contrast beautifully with the dark night sky, the rugged trunk of the tree rendered in bold calligraphic strokes. A beautiful subject with soft shading in the background and fine detail in the elegant fabrics. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
