The Chofu Jewel River

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Attractive scene from a series depicting the Six Jewel Rivers, here the Chofu or Cloth-beating Jewrl River. A beauty is fulling cloth on a verandah, beating the fabric with wooden mallets to enmesh the fibers and create a stronger cloth. A young child crawls onto her robe, which trails on the floor around her. The building opens out onto a view of a river, with a tiny ship visible in the distance. Beautiful warm color palette and fine detail, including embossing in the white ripples on the water.

Image Size - 10 3/4" x 7 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Light toning. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
