Onoguchi Tokuji of Second Army Blows Up Gates at Jinzhou Fortress, 1895

Comments - Terrific scene of Onoguchi Tokuji, who became a hero during the Sino-Japanese War. A soldier in the Second Army, Onoguchi destroyed two gates at Jinzhou Fortress with dynamite, leading to a Japanese victory. He is shown just outside the stone walls of the fortress as the explosion takes place, sending orange flames and clouds of black smoke issuing from the gate. A hail of bullets rains down all around him, and several dead enemies lie on the ground. A title cartouche at upper left tells the story in both English and kanji characters. A dramatic design with beautiful shading. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.

Artist - Toshikata (1866 - 1908)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Faint toning, slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
